Truck Driver Busted With 53 Pounds Of Cocaine At Border; Woman Hid Coke In Hot Chocolate
WINDSOR (WWJ) - A 45-year-old truck driver is behind bars in Canada after he allegedly tried to cross the Ambassador Bridge with more than 53 pounds of cocaine.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) say that 45-year-old Ashvinder Singh Kundi's commercial truck was searched at the border as he tried to enter Windsor from Detroit earlier this month.
Officers discovered 20 bricks of cocaine, the drugs were seized, and the Guelph, Ontario, man was arrested. He remains in custody with a court date set for Friday.
In a second significant border bust also announced on Thursday, police say a another Ontario resident was hiding about three pounds of cocaine in cans of hot chocolate mix as she attempted to cross the Fort Erie Peace Bridge in New York state on Sept. 12. The accused in that case, Kayon Beckford, is due in court next month.
"These cocaine seizures show that the CBSA's efforts to stop the smuggling of illicit drugs and keep contraband off our streets are working," said Rick Comerford, Regional Director General of the Southern Ontario Region CBSA in a statement. "I am proud of the work of our officers who are vigilant in their efforts to ensure our borders are not used for illegal activities."
Since January 2014, the CBSA in the Southern Ontario Region has seized over 723 pounds of cocaine at ports of entry.
