Trooper Cleared In Man's Death During Crossbow Confrontation

CATO TWP., Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Prosecutors have cleared a state trooper in the fatal shooting of a man who wounded a Montcalm County sheriff's deputy with a crossbow in October.

Montcalm County Prosecutor Andrea Krause made the determination that Trooper Timothy Moreno fired properly, in self-defense, according to a report in The Grand Rapids Press.

Moreno and Deputy Michael Kotenko were serving an arrest warrant on 40-year-old Travis Lee Quay at his Cato Township home, about 50 miles northeast of Grand Rapids, when they were shot at with a crossbow. Kotenko was struck in the side with an arrow and severely injured.

Moreno returned fire, striking Quay at least once. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
