Traffic Backed Up For Hours After Semi Slides On Its Side Across I-275

PLYMOUTH (WWJ) - Traffic was back up along northbound I-275 near Plymouth for hours on Thursday due to a semi truck on its side.

The accident happened mid-afternoon,  just before Ann Arbor Road. Traffic was inching by in the right lane for most of the day; although for a time the freeway was completely closed at the crash scene.

WWJ Traffic Reporter Randy Bhirdo said he saw the accident happen as he was on his way home from work, traveling east on Ann Arbor Road over I-275.

"I happened to look over to my right and I see this semi going on the ramp from eastbound not northbound — a little too fast, it appeared to me," Bhirdo said. "And then I started seeing him go over to his side. He not only left the ramp lane but he also slid across the freeway."

Hours after the accident, Bhirdo said, the truck remained where it stopped, blocking both the center and left lanes.

"It shook me up to watch that," Bhirdo said. "And I called it in right away...and it just shook me up. I didn't see it take out any other cars, luckily enough. Maybe one vehicle was involved, but not being crushed by it or anything."

EMS was on the scene, but there were no reports of any injuries.

Bhirdo said the crash left "traffic horrendously backed up" with delays all the way to Palmer Road, just north of Michigan Ave.

The freeway completely reopened at around 7 p.m.
