Traffic Alert: Full Closure Of I-96 Begins April 5
LIVONIA (WWJ) - It's going to be a cruel summer for drivers who rely on I-96 to get across town.
After a brief delay, the full closure of I-96 in Wayne County is now scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 5.
The Michigan Department of Transportation said a seven mile stretch of the freeway between Livonia and Redford Township will remain closed until October.
Schoolcraft Road, the I-96 service drive, will be open during construction but reduced to a single lane in both directions. Detours will be posted.
The closure is part of a $148 million to completely rebuild I-96 between Newburgh and Telegraph roads, which was originally constructed in 1971. This project will reconstruct the pavement, upgrade 37 overpasses, replace the drainage system and greatly improve the safety of the freeway. Aesthetic improvements are included as well, such as native plantings and new fencing.
