One person dead, 2 others injured after "random" Christmas Eve shooting in Oxford, Michigan

Three injured in Christmas Eve shooting in Oakland County

OXFORD, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - One person has died and two other people were injured after being shot on Christmas Eve in Oxford, Michigan, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said on Wednesday.

The sheriff's office said the communication center received an alert about a "major incident" on Ray Road between Lapeer and North Oxford roads. Authorities urge people to avoid the area until further notice.

The sheriff's office said responding deputies found three people injured in a shooting. The two other victims are expected to survive, the sheriff's office said.

The shooting, which the sheriff's office said appears to be random, happened north of Oxford High School.

A suspect was taken into custody, and a gun was recovered from the scene.

"At this point it appears that the terrible events of last night were completely random with the suspect just passing through the community when he went off on a violent spree at multiple locations," the sheriff's office said in a social media post. "He is a convicted felon with multiple past weapons offenses and we intend to seek every possible charge against him."
