Temps Keep Dropping, Gas Prices Keep Rising
DETROIT (WWJ) - Unlike the temperature, gas prices are going up.
GasBuddy.com says prices are up more than 10 cents over the past week to an average of $3.63 per gallon. That price is now almost 20 cents higher than the national average, which is $3.44 per gallon. The Metro Detroit price is about 37 cents more than one year ago.
"Gasoline prices, as expected, continued their rise over the last week," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Gregg Laskoski. "The pace in the increases slowed somewhat versus the week prior, but motorists shouldn't get excited over the one week slow down in the rise in prices."
Laskoski expects prices to go even higher as refineries are busy preparing the more expensive summer blend gasoline, which features fuel additives that reduce pollution.
"We fully expect that as refineries get into the prime of maintenance season, gasoline prices nationwide will continue to rise, and perhaps at the fastest rate we could see in 2014. We're starting to see cleaner burning summer gasoline come in to view across the nation, and with lower production as refineries prepare for an increase in demand and for summer spec gasoline, price spikes can occur," Laskoski said.
