Teen Survivor Of Uber Driver Shootings Leaves Rehabilitation Center

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A 14-year-old girl shot in the head during a deadly shooting rampage in southwestern Michigan has left a rehabilitation center.

Mary Free Bed Hospital spokeswoman Betsy Musolf says Abigail Kopf was released Wednesday. Abigail spent six weeks at the Grand Rapids facility and a couple of weeks in another hospital following the Feb. 20 rampage that killed six people and injured another woman.

"It's wonderful," said her mother, Vickie Kopf, in a video produced by the rehabilitation facility.

"I mean, she's an amazing kid — especially when you're told she might be bran dead or that she might not make it; and to see her walking and talking and doing therapy the way she is — and she's thriving at it. It's amazing."

Abigail says she's excited to see friends and pets, including her pig, Hamlet.

Uber driver Jason Dalton is charged with murder and attempted murder in the apparently random attacks.

Documents released in March by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Kalamazoo County sheriff's office contained a police report in which Dalton told investigators he was being controlled by the ride-hailing app through his cell phone.

Dalton told authorities after his arrest that when you "plug into" the Uber app, "you can actually feel the presence on you." He said the difference between the night of the shootings and others was that an icon on the Uber app that is normally red "had changed to black."

Dalton is due in court Friday for a competency hearing.

Defense attorney Eusebio Solis is challenging whether statements Dalton made to police will be admissible at trial.
