Teen Shot In Detroit High School Parking Lot

DETROIT (WWJ) - It was supposed to be a night of fun, but the annual Grammy Night at a high school on Detroit's east side ended with a shooting in the parking lot.

Detroit Public Schools Spokesman Steve Wasko said the incident happened Friday night as about 800 people were gathered at East English Village Preparatory Academy, at Cadieux Road and East Warren Avenue.

"The high school held an event called The Grammy's, which is a traditional event at a number of our high schools in the spring time that involves us, the seniors and their mock elections, as well as a lot of student entertainment," Wasko told WWJ's Kathryn Larson.

As the event was ending for the night, a fight broke out in the parking lot and shots were fired, injuring a 19-year-old.

"The individual who was the victim of the incident was not a student at the school and at this point, there's no known connection that we have between the incident and the event at the school, or the school in any way," Wasko said.

The teen was rushed to the hospital,  and according to reports, he sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Wasko said Detroit Public Schools Police Department and security personnel were on the scene and quickly acted to ensure the safety of the other families attending the event. No one else was injured.

According to reports, no arrests have been made. Detroit police are expected to update the case Saturday afternoon.

An investigation is ongoing.
