Teen Driver Arrested In Hit-And-Run Crash That Critically Injured Pedestrian

MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) - Officials say a 17-year-old driver who left the scene of an alcohol-related accident called police over an hour later to report that she struck a pedestrian.

The situation unfolded during the early morning hours Tuesday near the intersection of 21 Mile and Garfield roads in Macomb Township.

According to police, a 2002 Dodge Intrepid was travelling northbound on Garfield Road when the teen driver struck a 28-year-old Macomb Township man and fled the scene.

Another motorist found the injured man lying in the roadway around 12:40 a.m. and contacted police, who immediately responded to the area. The injured man, whose name was not released, was treated at a local hospital and then transferred to a hospital in Detroit, where he remains in critical condition.

As police were investigating the accident, they received a call around 1:50 a.m. from the teen driver. Police say the girl, also from Macomb Township, admitted to hitting a pedestrian and was subsequently taken into custody.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, although police would not elaborate. An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is urged to contact police at 586-307-9412.
