Teen Charged In Slaying Of Woman Who Was Picking Up Son

DETROIT (AP) - A teenager has been charged with killing a Detroit woman who was shot in her car while waiting to pick up her son from a basketball practice.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 17-year-old Ralph Marshall was charged Thursday with murder, carjacking and a gun crime. He appeared in court to hear the charges and was returned to jail without bond. An attorney will be assigned.

The prosecutor's office says 43-year-old Erica Garner was shot in the head Wednesday when Marshall approached and tried to steal her car. Garner's 11-year-old son was finishing basketball practice.

Garner urged a passerby to call police but didn't survive. Police Chief James Craig called the shooting a "heinous tragedy."

Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt says Marshall was suspected in a carjacking and shooting last weekend.
