Boycott Target Pledges Signed By Nearly A Half Million People After Retailer Supports Transgender Bathroom

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) The conservative American Family Association is claiming a victory after a nearly half-million people signed a petition pledging to boycott Target after the retailer announced its bathrooms would be friendly to transgender people.

"Corporate America must stop bullying people who disagree with the radical left agenda to remake society into their progressive image," wrote AFA president Tim Wildman in a blog post.

"#BoycottTarget has resonated with Americans."

After a national debate about the rights of transgender people, Target officially announced a policy of inclusion, writing on its website, ""[W]e welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong."

For its part, the AFA president says he's urging the boycott because "Target's harmful policy poses a danger to women and children. Predators and voyeurs would take advantage of the policy to prey on those who are vulnerable."

Public reaction runs the gamut.

"It's clear now that many customers agree," the AFA president wrote. "Target shoppers are leaving their allegiance to the store behind—and by the thousands every hour. No store can withstand that sort of loss."
