Table Of Compassion Helps Those In Dire Need In Freezing Temps
DETROIT (WWJ) - With the temperatures hovering around 10 degrees and the air feeling , focus turned to helping the homeless in Detroit.
A table has been set up in Cass Park laden with blankets, lunches and hats or socks for those who are down on their luck. It's all part an effort by Mentoring Youth Detroit.
"This right here helps me to obtain things I can not afford to buy," said Jones.
President and Founder of Project Warm Detroit, Tony Weston, spoke with WWJ:
"We set our tables up, things to give away ... we line them up, and let them just take what they want off the table, every year.
Children who are part of the mentoring program helped to hand out the items in the 10 degree temperatures Saturday morning.
Ten-year-old Samia DeBoest tells WWJ's Beth Fisher that being at this event is important, "because people need a place to live."
Nine-year-old Asia Cochran helped out, "because they live in the streets."
Della Davis was one of the people there and tells WWJ she just received an eviction notice. "I need it, I really need it, some of these things on the table," she said shivering. She tells WWJ that her heat is on a timer.
The group alerted the homeless to the event through various homeless shelters.
