10-Hour Standoff Ends With 1 Suspect In Custody, At Least 1 Missing In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - A southwest Detroit street was loaded with police and SWAT teams for 10 hours on Monday where as many as three armed robbery suspects barricaded themselves inside a home.

One man was taken away in handcuffs, late Monday morning, but it remained an active scene all day long — on Wheelock Street near I-75 and Springwells.

Reporting live, WWJ's Charlie Langton said explosions were heard as flash-bang grenades were thrown by police into the house in an attempt to scare the remaining suspect or suspects out.

"There's a lot of police presence," Langton reported, Monday afternoon. "Mostly state cops...about 13 marked that I counted, as well as three different SWAT teams."

Officers later entered the home to find no one was inside and that the remaining suspect or suspects must have escaped.

According to Michigan State Police Lt. Calvin Hart, it all started with an armed robbery at a hotel in Redford Township. The suspects then drove to Detroit where they abandoned their vehicle.

Police followed.

"We (State Police) became involved in pursuit and we ended up at this location where the suspects bailed from their vehicle," Hart said. "We had a K-9 unit that was involved and they tracked the suspects to the location that we are at now."

Nearby Roberto Clemente Elementary School was on lockdown as a precaution.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt. Police were expected to release more information Monday evening.
