Suspect In Scary Clown Mask Robs Downriver Walgreens

BROWNSTOWN TWP. (WWJ) - Police Downriver are searching for a suspect who robbed a drug store at gunpoint -- while wearing a scary clown mask.

The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Walgreens on West and Telegraph roads in Brownstown Township.

According to police, the suspect entered the store with his gun drawn and demanded cash.

"He had on a black hoodie pulled over his head, a white clown mask underneath and dark colored pants," Deputy Chief Robert Matthews told WWJ's Charlie Langton.

The suspect made off with $300 to $400 cash, fleeing the scene in a blue Chevy Impala.

"We have no suspects at this time," said Matthews. "This is our first incident of a clown mask conducting an armed robbery. I think the clown mask is a good concealment device and obviously with the present incidents in the news, maybe it was just an opportunity to do so."

Because the suspect concealed his face, Matthews said any potential charges will likely be elevated.

"There's an additional state statute that makes it a misdemeanor to wear a mask during the commission of a crime so besides the armed robbery and the felonious assault, that misdemeanor charge could be added onto it," he said. "You've got a high felony as well as wearing the mask and being armed with a handgun, which is a mandatory two year felony, so there's some pretty substantial charges in this incident."

At this point, police don't have any further description of the suspect, who remains at large.

Anyone with information on the incident or the suspect is urged to contact police at 734-675-1300.
