Survivors And Others Trek 60 Miles Across Metro Detroit For 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk

(WWJ) -- Hundreds of men and women are walking 60 miles in just three days in Metro Detroit to help bring awareness and help to end breast cancer.

The Komen 3-Day Walk is making its way toward Novi, where walkers will make camp for the night. The breast cancer awareness walk will be the eleventh for Nino Mericola.

"I've walked in Detroit ten straight years and I walked in Tampa one year," Mericola said. "I walked because I had cancer about 11 years ago. It was prostate cancer but I feel like I'm trying to give back because I survived and I'm doing great. So I'm just trying to give back."

The walk -- which is expected to raise nearly $3 million to fight breast cancer -- wraps up with a closing ceremony at Ford World Headquarters on Sunday evening in Dearborn.

Tonya Schiaudone is participating in her fourth walk after she flew in from Boston with her daughter for the event.

"Originally, we did get involved because my husband's mother passed away from breast cancer at the age of 49," Schiaudone said. "But we have friends who are 19-year survivors and everything so we're very, very happy to be able to do this and try to get as much money and eradicate this disease."

More information about the walk can be found at the Komen 3-Day website.
