Study: Physical Activity Continues To Benefit Seniors Into Their 70s And 80s

DETROIT (WWJ) - A new study looks at whether exercise can help seniors retain their independence longer.

University of Florida researchers focused on more than 1,600 patients, ages 70 to 89, who were at high risk of becoming unable to walk without assistance.

They randomly assigned one group to participate in a structured physical activity program, while another group attended health-related workshops and did upper body stretching.

Study author, Doctor Marco Pahor shared the results with WWJ's Health Reporter Sean Lee.

"The physical activity group experienced eighteen percent reduction in major mobility disability risk," said Dr. Pahor.

The study appears in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
