Street Project Could Reconfigure Busy Detroit Intersection
DETROIT (AP) - Crews are to start working on lane changes at a busy intersection in downtown Detroit to make navigation easier for pedestrians.
The city says the pilot project at Gratiot Avenue, Randolph and two other streets near Greektown could lead to a permanent reconfiguration next year.
Officials say the new configuration would make it easier for pedestrians to travel between the Greektown restaurant and entertainment district and other popular areas around downtown.
Changes also could include a 13,000-square-foot pedestrian plaza. Food trucks and sidewalk seating could be part of the plaza. Vehicle travel time through the area also is expected to be improved.
Lane reductions on Randolph will start this week. Traffic is expected to be shifted starting Nov. 7.
