State Inspector Caught Golfing On Public Time Pleads Guilty

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A state elevator inspector accused of playing golf while on the clock has pleaded guilty to false pretenses and must pay more than $11,000 in restitution.

Werner Noll was charged last year, months after TV station WWMT found him golfing in Portage during work hours in 2014. The Kalamazoo man had been an elevator inspector since 1998.

An investigation found that Noll used state time and a state vehicle for personal activities for 83 days in 2012, 2013 and 2014. He is no longer employed by the state.

"Taxpayers deserve honesty and accountability from state employees at all levels," Attorney General Bill Schuette said in a statement. "Those who take advantage and misuse state resources will have to face the consequences of their actions."

Noll is due back in court for sentencing on June 22.
