Start Layering! Iditarod Qualifier Needs Volunteers For UP Race

MARQUETTE (WWJ) - The UP 200 , a qualifier for the Iditarod, begins Friday, February 12 and they still need about 100 volunteers.

Volunteer coordinator Ann Sanford says people go the UP for the sled dog race from all over Michigan.

"We also need dog handlers and timers at our check-in ... and at the start and finish.  We also need people to sell merchandise," said Sanford.

The race goes from Marquette to Grand Marais and back. The terrain includes stretches of near-wilderness, creek crossings, hills and valleys, and heavily forested land.

The course is 240 miles and volunteers help keep spectators off the race track as well as guard the road crossings.
