Snyder Promises State Assistance In Wake Of UP Mine Closure

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Rick Snyder says state agencies will lend assistance to communities located near an Upper Peninsula iron ore mine that is being closed.

He visited Negaunee in Marquette County on Friday to announce a "rapid response team" that will partner with local leaders to address challenges brought by the closing the Empire Mine. The last day of pellet production was earlier in August.

Several hundred jobs are being eliminated at the end of August.

Snyder says the mine closure is "painful for many residents." He says the state can help respond to problems but also "plot a path to a prosperous future."

Families affected by the layoffs could gain assistance through existing state and federal programs. Additional details may be determined in coming weeks.
