Smoke Seen Across The River As Crews Battle Windsor Building Fire

WINDSOR (WWJ) -Windsor firefighter spend Monday afternoon putting out hot spots at a restaurant and auto shop following a massive fire that started in the morning.

The blaze, at the Le Chef Restaurant and Downtown Auto Service Building on Wyandotte Street, a few blocks from the Detroit River,  sent thick black smoke into the air that which could seen for miles — prompting some in Southeast Michigan to believe there was a big fire in Detroit.

Chief Fire Prevention Officer John Lee said all hands were on deck.

"There were three aerial towers up shooting water as well as six hand lines with crews manning the hand lines and going through the windows," he told WWJ's Zahra Huber.

Lee said the fire caused a partial roof and wall collapse, and their concern was the safety of the crews and local residents.

"We wanted to make sure the crews were cycled and hydrated and safe and being monitored," he said.

Local residents were asked to close their windows due to heavy smoke, but that advisory has since been lifted.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire, which started in the back of the auto shop, is under investigation.
