Several Hurt When Armored Vehicle, Cement Truck, SMART Bus Collide In Redford Township

REDFORD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Several people were hurt in an accident involving a SMART bus, an armored vehicle and a cement truck Tuesday in Redford Township.

The accident happened just before noon on Grand River Ave., between Beech Daly and Inkster Road, according to police.

Talking to WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeill at the scene, Redford Police Officer Jonathan Strong said one person in the armored vehicle was injured, along with "more than one" bus passenger.

"The Total Armored car was traveling eastbound, suffered a mechanical failure, sideswiped a cement truck and came to rest next to a SMART bus," Strong said.

"It crashed into the bus," he clarified, "but there could've been more damage."

It was not immediately known exactly how many people were hurt, but non of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening.

The armored truck lost its front passenger-side wheel, but no cash was spilled in the crash. The money was transferred to another vehicle before the truck was towed from the scene.

Strong said he didn't write any tickets.

Both eastbound and westbound Grand River were closed for an investigation, but all lanes were reopened to traffic before 2 p.m.
