Man Fires Shots At Carjacker, Gets Chased By Crowbar-Wielding Suspect At Detroit Gas Station
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are investigating after bullets went flying during a bizarre carjacking attempt at a busy gas station on Detroit's east side.
The incident took place around 6:40 a.m. Tuesday at the BP gas station on the corner of East Outer Drive and Harper, just north of I-94.
Police say the victim was pumping gas in his older model, green Buick when the suspect approached and said "I'll kill you," before jumping in the car and attempting to drive off. At that point, the victim -- a valid CPL holder -- took out his gun and started shooting, according to police, striking the suspect.
Police say the suspect briefly chased after the victim with a crowbar from the victim's own vehicle before he gave up and fled the scene.
No arrests have been made in the case. Police say they are looking for a shorter, bald man in his 30s or 40s, with a mustache, wearing a white or gray sweatshirt and blue jeans. The man should be considered armed and dangerous, and could still be carrying the crowbar. He should not be approached.
Brian Thompson, a regular customer at the gas station, was shocked to hear about what happened.
"Yeah, I've been coming here maybe 16 or 17 years every morning getting my coffee," he said. "I've never had any problem up here. Never heard of any problem up here, you know, everybody knows the owner and it's a family run business."
An investigation is ongoing.
