Shot Fired, Teen Arrested At Ferndale Alternative School

FERNDALE (WWJ) - A shot was fired and a student was arrested at a Ferndale alternative school.

Police were called Thursday to the Digital Learning Center on Allen Road, where they found a 17 year-old student to be in possession of marijuana and a small firearm.

During the course of the search, according to a Ferndale Schools spokesman, the gun accidentally discharged and the bullet lodged in the wall.

No one was hurt in the incident.

The students, whose name was not immediately released, was taken into custody.

"Student safety is at the center of everything we do in Ferndale Schools," Ferndale Schools Director of Communications Bill Good said, in a statement. "We are exploring all options and will act swiftly to ensure the safety of all of our students."

An investigation is ongoing.

Good said it was expected information would be  forwarded to the Office of the Oakland County Prosecutor for formal criminal charges.

According to the school district's website, the Digital Learning Center (DLC) is an alternative and innovative high school for students aged 14-19, offering " a High School Diploma on your terms! Anywhere. Anytime."
