Security Experts Warn Of Possible Facebook Messenger Payment Scam
By Edward Cardenas
SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - Facebook has rolled out a new payment feature in its Messenger feature, and while it may be convenient, a security expert warns of possible scams.
The Messenger Payment service became available nationwide July 1 and allows users to connect using a debit card to their accounts, and by clicking an icon in the Messenger app, users can send cash to a friend.
But Stu Sjouwerman, CEO at KnowBe4, wrote in a blog post that users should be wary of phishing attacks.
He states that despite Facebook's claims they have "layers of software and hardware protection that meet the highest industry standards," there are some possible techniques scammers could use to get users cash.
Sjouwerman stated that some users may be victim to phishing attacks that claim the user has received money from a Facebook friend. The user would then be prompted to open Facebook Messenger and get their cash.
He urges Facebook users to be alert when they receive emails that claim a Facebook friend has sent money. Additionally, when a friend sends a message that their account has been hacked, there is a attempting a scam by impersonating a friend.
Sjouwerman stated in his blog post, "Think Before You Click."
