Salvation Army Gets Largest Product Donation In History, Thanks To Detroit Marriott Renovation

DETROIT (WWJ)- The Detroit Marriott is set to begin a $30 million renovation that will transform 1,329 rooms and 100,000 square feet of meeting rooms, and the Salvation Army will receive a generous donation because of it.

The landmark hotel is donating more than 22,000 pieces of furniture to the Salvation Army ARC in phases over the next year. The furniture will be sold at 34 metro Detroit locations.

The donations include wooden desks, night stands, dressers, upholstered chairs and headboards, as well as lamps, mirrors, wall hangings, linens and bed sheets.

"Oh, this is huge, this is the largest product donation in Salvation Army history," said Bob Idzior, a donation specialist with the Salvation Army.

Idzior said the money raised from the sale of the furniture will be used to fund its two adult rehabilitation centers in Metro Detroit.

"There are men and women suffering from addiction. It's a 180 day program that requires people to stay in house," Idzior said.
