Romulus Woman Sentenced In Hit-And-Run Death Of 8-Year-Old Boy
WESTLAND (WWJ/AP) - A metro Detroit woman will spend 25 to 50 years in prison for a hit-and-run crash that killed an 8-year-old boy.
Judge Mark Slavens sentenced Kimberly Garrett of Romulus Tuesday in Wayne County Circuit Court for second-degree murder.
Garrett also was sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison for operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death.
Prosecutors say Garrett used heroin, cocaine and Xanax before she struck Kayale Fruge on June 20 while he was riding his bike on Delton Street in Westland, west of Detroit.
Garrett didn't stop at the scene, but a witness called 911 and followed her to a home where she was arrested.
Kayale died at a local hospital four days later after he was taken off of life support by his family.
Family members said the boy's heartbreaking death brought community members together to talk about adding sidewalks and other safety features to better protect Westland kids.
