Man Killed In Rollover Accident, Swerving To Avoid Boxes On Freeway

DETROIT (WWJ) - An early morning accident takes the life of the driver Monday.

The accident happened about 7 a.m. in the local lanes of eastbound I-96 -- near Grand River and Schaefer roads.

Michigan State Police tells WWJ that the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt,  was killed in that rollover crash.

Police say the driver swerved to avoid hitting some empty boxes on the freeway and lost control of the car which hit the median between the local and express lanes of I-96.

In the moments after it happened, several other drivers pulled over, and started throwing snow on the car, out of fear of a possible fire -- until emergency crews arrived on the scene.

The car was driven by a 40-year-old man, his name has been withheld pending notification of family.

Michigan State Police is continuing to investigate this incident.
