Teen Arrested After Stepdad, An Air Force Sergeant, Found Shot To Death

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a 19-year-old man accused of killing his step-father has been taken into custody after eluding police in Detroit.

The shooting happened 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 5900 block of Woodhall Street, near Chandler Park Drive and Cadieux Road on the city's east side.

"We received a call indicating there was some family trouble going on," Sgt. Michael Woody said live on WWJ. "When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered that there was a 42-year-old male fatally shot and a 39-year-old female that had sustained gunshot wounds."

Before being taken to the hospital for treatment, Woody said the woman identified the shooter as her own son, Antonio Hicks.

"We began canvassing the area right away," he said. "Shortly after we had broadcast the description of Mr. Hicks, one of our units picked him up in the area of 7 Mile and Mac Crary. We were able to take him into custody without any incident."

After he was arrested, Hicks was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.

"It appears that he does suffer from some type of psychological disorder," Woody said. "Unfortunately, I don't want to go into diagnosing him just yet. We were told that he's been off some medications that he normally takes, which may have contributed to the incident this morning."

The deceased victim is an Air Force sergeant who was stationed at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township. Brenda Clyburn identified the victim as her son, Johnny Clyburn.

"My son spent 20 years in the military police. He's one of the good guys. My baby helped his girlfriend's 19-year-old boy, let him stay there -- and he kills him, and more than likely with his own gun," Brenda Clyburn told WWJ's Ron Dewey. "I don't care what has to be done, [Hicks] is to be executed because he knew what he was doing."

The incident remains under investigation.
