Back in February, golf fans across metro Detroit were as happy as could be when the AP announced that top golfers Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy would be facing off in a prime time match at Detroit Golf Club on June 7.
According to The Detroit News, that match is no longer going to take place.
Detroit Golf Club's executives were preparing Friday to inform members that the event, which had been targeted for June 7, has run aground because of financial issues, said a source close to the conversations who wished to remain anonymous because of sensitivities to the sponsor, Quicken Loans, and to the DGC.
This is pretty sad news for golf fans in Detroit. This would have been the first time in years that PGA Tour golfers would compete in the area. The Buick Open, which was held at Warwick Hills In Grand Blanc, was the last PGA Tour event in Michigan and the final year for that was in 2009. Tiger Woods won the event.
The event was scheduled to be "Team Rory" against "Team Rickie" and was supposed to have celebrities Justin Timberlake and Mark Wahlburg join the teams.
Do you hope that somehow this event will still take place?
