Group Organizing LGBT Event At Lions Game In October
According to The Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Regional LGBT Chamber of Commerce is planning an LGBT Pride night during the Lions game vs. the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 25 at Ford Field.
More than 1,000 people have attended the group's previous events at Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings games. A board member for the group, Kevin Heard, said they expect to surpass for the Lions game in a few months.
"We do anticipate a good 1,400- to 1,500-member (turnout) to piggyback on the 1,400 people that we had at the Tigers pride night," Keith told The Free Press. "We expect a lot of those that can't get in the stadium, that they'll at least be available for the tailgate."
CEO of the Detroit Regional LGBT Chamber of Commerce James Felton Keith spoke to the free press about what it means to see Detroit become the first city to host an LGBT Pride event at an NFL game.
"It means a lot, in particular the support and rapid response from (the Lions)," Keith told The Free Press. "It means the world, actually.(...) These large sporting events play into our InDetroit campaign (and) our Inclusive Detroit campaign, which primarily affects the large corporations in the area. But these sports franchises are some of the largest corporations in the area and they affect the overall social sentiment."
Tickets for the event will be going on sale later this summer, according to The Free Press.
Correction: The original story incorrectly reported that the Detroit Lions were hosting the event. The Detroit Regional LGBT Chamber of Commerce is independently organizing this event.
