Red Wings To Play Avalanche At Coors Field In 2016 As Part Of 'Stadium Series'

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) -- Two years after hosting the Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor for the largest hockey crowd in history, the Detroit Red wings will be back on the outdoor rink in 2016.

The NHL announced Saturday that the Red Wings will be playing the Colorado Avalanche on February 27, 2016 at Denver's Coors Field -- home of the Colorado Rockies -- as a part of next season's Stadium Series.

Joining the Wings and Avs next season with an outdoor game will be the Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild playing at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus on February 21.

The Winter Classic, the league's annual New Year's Day game, will feature the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
