Red Wings Recall Mantha

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today recalled right wing Anthony Mantha from the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins and placed center Andreas Athanasiou on injured reserve.

Mantha, 22, is currently tied atop the American Hockey League leaderboard with eight goals through his first 10 games of the season, while also pacing the Griffins in points (10), power-play goals (4) and shots (34). In all, the third-year pro has logged 132 games with the Griffins and has totaled 88 points (44-44-88), a plus-20 rating and 102 penalty minutes. The Longueuil, Quebec, native made his NHL debut last season and skated in 10 games with the Red Wings, recording two goals and one assist.

Originally drafted by the Red Wings in the first round (20th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Mantha recorded 260 points (129-131-260) in 189 games for the Val-d'Or Foreurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. After leading the QMJHL with 120 points (57-63-120) in 57 games, Mantha was named the Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year. The 6-foot-5, 204-pound winger totaled 81 goals in 81 total games during the 2013-14 season, notching a league-best 57 in the regular season and adding 24 in the postseason, where he led Val-d'Or with 38 points (24-14-38) to help the team to a QMJHL championship. He also received the Michel Briere Trophy as the QMJHL's most-valuable player and Jean Beliveau Trophy for leading the league in points and was named a QMJHL First-Team All-Star. Mantha also led Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship with 11 points (5-6-11) in seven games.
