Red Wings' Howard Injures Groin, Carted Off Ice

WASHINGTON (AP) — Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard has been carted off the ice with a groin injury suffered in the first period against the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.

Howard was hurt attempting to make a save on Troy Brouwer's power-play goal at 1:53. The team announced he will not return.

After Washington dumped the puck in, Howard stopped it behind the net and started back around front, but Brouwer got to the puck first. As Brouwer stuffed the puck in the right side, Howard - coming from the left - stretched trying to make the save.

He remained down on his stomach as the trainer came out. After about five minutes, Howard rose to his knees, was placed on a stretcher and carted to the locker room.

Howard, selected to his second NHL All-Star game earlier Saturday, was replaced by Petr Mrazek.
