Red Wings Fall, 5-1, In Toronto After Delayed Start

TORONTO (AP) — Dion Phaneuf scored twice, Brandon Kozun had a goal and two assists, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 in their preseason finale Friday night.

Jake Gardiner and James van Riemsdyk also scored for Toronto (5-2-1), and Jonathan Bernier stopped 19 shots.

Kozun set up Gardiner's goal with a drop pass and a pick on a Red Wings defender, fed Phaneuf for one of his goals and scored on a nifty back-hander past former Leafs goalie Jonas Gustavsson. Phaneuf also had an assist and just missed out on a hat trick.

Xavier Oullet had the lone goal for the Red Wings (3-3-1), who experienced travel delays leaving Detroit and getting through Toronto traffic from the airport to the arena. The team arrived at about 6:45 p.m., and the game was delayed by about 15 minutes.
