Red Wings Announce 2016-17 Schedule For The Farewell Season At The Joe
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today announced their 2016-17 schedule for the team's "Farewell Season at The Joe." The year-long celebration will highlight historic games and entertainment acts held at The Joe during the building's illustrious 38-year history with championship and alumni celebrations, memorable giveaways and special entertainment performances leading up to the final regular-season game at Joe Louis Arena on Sunday, April 9 against the New Jersey Devils.
The schedule features a fan-friendly home slate of 23 weekend games (six Fridays, nine Saturdays, eight Sundays). Detroit will host all Original Six opponents at least one more time at The Joe and will play a total of 18 games against the Original Six, including five games against the Montreal Canadiens and four games against the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs.
The puck drops on the regular season with a pair of games on the road (Oct. 13 at Tampa Bay Lightning; Oct. 15 at Florida Panthers) before the Red Wings return for the Home Opener on Oct. 17 against the Ottawa Senators. After starting the season on the road, the Red Wings will then play eight of their next 11 games at Joe Louis Arena, which includes six weekend contests (two Fridays, two Saturdays, two Sundays). After the Thanksgiving holiday, the Red Wings will play eight of their next 12 at The Joe, including the team's longest homestand of the season, a five-game stretch from Dec. 9-17. The Red Wings will wrap up the 2016 calendar year with a lengthy stint on the road, playing 10 of 11 away from Joe Louis Arena during a stretch from Dec. 19-Jan. 12.
Additional highlights of the season include an outdoor rematch of the 2014 NHL Winter Classic between the Red Wings and Maple Leafs at BMO Field in Toronto in the first-ever NHL Centennial Classic; a Saturday evening tilt against Sidney Crosby and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Jan. 14 at The Joe; and a weekend home set against two Original Six opponents (Friday, March 10 vs. Chicago Blackhawks; Sunday, March 12 vs. New York Rangers).
Detroit will finish the 2016-17 campaign with nine of their last 11 games against fellow Atlantic Division foes and four of their last five games at home, as the team pushes for a 26th consecutive postseason appearance. The Red Wings will say farewell to Joe Louis Arena with a back-to-back set starting on April 8 against the Montreal Canadiens and culminating in the final regular-season game at The Joe on April 9 against the New Jersey Devils.
