Record-Breaking Warmth Expected In Metro Detroit This Weekend

DETROIT (WWJ) - Those out hanging Christmas lights may still need a jacket, but it'll be (relatively) warm all weekend long in metro Detroit.

"It is not going to feel at all like December over the next several days," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson. "We're going to be tying or perhaps even breaking a records or two as we head toward the weekend."

AccuWeather is calling for a breezy, mild Thursday, with temps rising as high as 57 degrees with times of clouds and sunshine and then more of the same on Friday with a high of 55.

The forecasted high temperature for Saturday is 61 degrees.

"That would tie the record set back in 1949," said Thompson. "Now, we could break a really old record on Sunday. The record high is 60 — set back in 1881. We're expecting a high of 62."

The National Weather Service says metro Detroiters have a strong El Niño to thank for all of this.  As far back as last June, meteorologists were predicting Southeast Michiganders could expect a milder autumn and winter in the form of slightly higher temperatures and less precipitation.
