Prosecutors Charge Young Woman Who Lied About Abduction

MONROE (WWJ/AP) - Monroe County prosecutors say they've charged an 18-year-old woman with causing a false police report to be filed after she was reported missing and found a day later.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Costello Jr. says the charge filed Thursday against Hayley Turner is a four-year felony.

Authorities say Turner claimed she was abducted, just north of Ohio in Bedford Township, and held hostage for 16 hours — but the whole thing was a lie.

Turner was reported missing around 10 p.m. on Aug. 7 after police say called her friend to say she was going to stop and check on a man laying in a ditch at Dean and Crabb roads after leaving a Family Video store.  Seconds later, police said, Turner told her friend, 'He has a gun' and the phone was disconnected.

The following day, a local resident spotted Turner standing at a corner in Ecorse and called 911 when the teen claimed she'd jumped from a moving vehicle to escape her captor.

Ecorse Detective Lt. Gregory Blade said he didn't believe the teen from the start; and when he interviewed her, the story just didn't add up. Ecorse police  also wanted Wayne County prosecutors to charge her, but a department spokeswoman now says Monroe is handling the case.

Costello  on Thursday said prosecutors were working with Turner's lawyer Bill Godfroy for her surrender. The Associated Press left a message Thursday afternoon for Godfroy.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the lie and details regarding where Turner might have been that night have not been made public.
