Probe Into Detroit Police Chase That Killed 2 Kids Recommends Clearing Officers
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Three Detroit police officers likely won't be held responsible for a high-speed chase that resulted in the deaths of two children.
The Detroit Police Department recently completed an internal investigation into the June 24 incident in which officers pursued a suspect for almost 72 seconds along a residential street.
Detroit police spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody told MLive.com that another commanding officer still needs to review the results of the investigation and make a final determination, but it's been recommended that the officers be exonerated.
"It was determined that during the incident the officers observed what appeared to be a weapon which lead them to attempt to initiate a traffic stop," Woody said. "The suspect vehicle refused to stop."
Police say 30-year-old Lorenzo Harris was driving a stolen vehicle at about 100 mph when it lost control and went off the roadway, killing a 6-year-old boy and his 3-year-old sister. Three other children and an adult also were injured.
Harris is charged with second-degree murder, fleeing police and other crimes.
