Prep Football Star Who Body Slammed Security Guard Decommits From Michigan State
DETROIT (WWJ) - A Cass Tech football star who pleaded guilty to assault charges for body slamming a high school security guard has changed his mind about where he wants to play college football.
Jayru Campbell confirmed during an interview Monday night on WXYZ that he's no longer planning to attend Michigan State University next year.
"I would say I have opened up the recruiting process again and decommitted from Michigan State," Campbell told the TV station. "I'm just trying to enjoy the recruitment process for my last year in high school."
Campbell pleaded guilty to misdemeanor aggravated assault last month. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail, to undergo drug testing, counseling and anger management classes, complete 75 hours of community service, and pay more than $600 in court costs. His jail term is set to begin Aug. 28, after he completes summer school.
Campbell admitted that he slammed a security officer head-first on Jan. 22 after refusing to pull a hood off his head. The confrontation was recorded on video.
Campbell is expected to draw attention from several college recruiters, including schools from Wisconsin, Alabama and Notre Dame. Two other schools, Cincinnati and LSU, have also reportedly shown interest in Campbell, who will begin his senior season at Cass Tech this fall.
Campbell, as quarterback, led Cass Tech to state championships in 2011 and 2012.
