Power Back At Detroit Schools After 2-Day Shutdown
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit's lighting department says it's finished restoring power to all of the 21 public schools that lost service in a storm, keeping 10 of them closed for two days.
City officials blamed damage from strong winds Tuesday that swept through Detroit for the power outage that closed the Detroit Public Schools buildings and darkened traffic signals.
Officials added the underlying issue is that the system is unstable due to copper theft.
Ongoing problems with Detroit's decrepit electrical grid have been a continuing concern in the bankrupt city; and outages such as like this are not uncommon.
Attributed to "system overload," a widespread outage last summer shut down power to Wayne State University, the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, the City-County building, and midtown museums for two days.
