Police: Searching For Yellow Taxi Involved In Drive-By Shooting On Freeway

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are investigating a Sunday morning drive-by shooting involving a cab and a car on Southfield Freeway.

Lieutenant Michael Shaw says the cab entered the southbound Southfield Freeway from Plymouth Road at a high rate of speed and passed the victim's vehicle.

The victim, with a passenger in his car,  flashed his high beams at the taxi cab after it passed them at a high rate of speed.

"The individual and a passenger were traveling southbound on Southfield Freeway, when a yellow in color, Ford Crown Victoria taxi cab passed them at a high rate of speed. When the victim flashed their headlights at them to try to get them to slow down a little bit, that's when the taxi cab slowed back down - got parallel and a shot was fired from one of the rear seat passengers of this vehicle," described Shaw.

The driver was shot in the leg. He is now recovering.

"It's described as yellow and he's using the word 'checkered,' and we are not sure if that means he's just associating all taxi cabs as checkered but it is a yellow, Crown Victoria, taxi cab," said Shaw.

Michigan State Police SIS is asking if anyone was on the Southfield freeway southbound at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday and witnessed the incident, or anyone with information on this incident to please call  the Michigan State Police Tip Line at 877 616-4677 or Crime stoppers at 800 SPEAK-UP.
