Police: 'Punk' Armed With Uzi Charged In Roseville Carjacking
ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - A young man armed with an Uzi tried, and failed, to carjack a Roseville woman Monday morning, according to police.
"He's a punk. If you can't walk in your house and get ready to go to work, there's something wrong," said Roseville Police Chief James Berlin of the 19-year-old suspect, now in custody.
"He's a punk, with a capital P."
Berlin said the suspect — later identified as Dietrich Sanders of Detroit — held the woman at gunpoint and attempted to steal her vehicle, but wasn't able to complete his crime.
"Unfortunately for him, or unbeknownst to him, when he got in the car...she'd used her auto-start. Not having her key, he could not put it in gear, so he was not able to get away with her car. We caught him a few blocks away," said Berlin.
"He gave us a fake name, fake everything, and we identified him through his fingerprints."
Police said the weapon confiscated was an Uzi M11/9mm.
The woman was not injured.
Berlin said it appears to have been a random crime.
"He, apparently, was out looking for a victim of opportunity," Berlin said. "This poor woman left her home at the wrong time and he accosted her at gunpoint..."
Bond was set at $1,000,000 for Sanders, who was arraigned in 39th District Court Monday afternoon on one count of carjacking and one count of felony firearm.
He remains held at the Macomb County Jail pending his next court appearance set for Wednesday, April 29.
Berlin said Sanders had already been wanted by Detroit police for illegally carrying a concealed weapon.
