Police: Man Arrested At Kroger With $514 Worth Of Stolen Groceries

MACOMB (WWJ) - Authorities say a 44-year-old man was arrested at a Macomb County Kroger after trying to leave the store without paying for a cart full of groceries worth more than $500.

Michael Pegg, of Harrison Township, was arraigned Thursday on charges of first-degree retail fraud -- second offense, possession of analogues, and resisting and obstructing arrest. Bond was set at $20,000 bond.

The charges stem from an incident that happened around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kroger store on 21 Mile and Card roads in Macomb.

Police say they received a call about a possible larceny in-progress, and that Kroger Loss Prevention officers were presently monitoring an individual -- later identified as Pegg -- in the store.

Police say Pegg walked past all points of purchase with a cart full of merchandise and deputies were waiting as he left the store.

When deputies approached Pegg outside of the store, he refused commands and instead placed his hands in his pockets, according to police.

"He was told that he was under arrest and he attempted to walk away," police said in a statement. "Sheriff deputies wrestled him to the ground and he was placed under arrest."

Police say the cart contained $514 worth of unpaid merchandise, which was returned to Kroger personnel.

When police searched Pegg, they also found two pill containers which contained fifty-four tablets of prescription medication that wasn't prescribed to him.

Pegg, who is currently held at the Macomb County Jail, is due back in court on May 5.
