Police Investigate Report Of Patient Abuse At Novi Nursing Home

NOVI (WWJ/AP) - Police have launched an investigation after receiving a report that a 62-year-old patient at a metro Detroit nursing home was beaten by a worker.

The incident allegedly happened earlier this week at the Whitehall Healthcare Center on 10 Mile and Novi roads in Novi.

Beth Johns told WXYZ-TV that the attack on her husband, Thomas David, left him hospitalized with injuries.

Johns said she's not sure what sparked the alleged attack by a certified nursing assistant, but more than one witness called 911 to report the incident.

"He's harmless, he couldn't defend himself," Johns told the TV station. "I want people to know this goes on and needs to be stopped."

No arrests have been made. Johns said she expects her husband, who suffers from dementia, to be released from the hospital in the next few days.

The company that runs Whitehall Healthcare Center said in a statement it is "thoroughly investigating and cooperating with all local and state authorities."

"The safety of those entrusted to our care is our top priority and as such, we will continue to cooperate at every level," the statement said.
