Police Investigate Death Of 3-Year-Old Detroit Girl; Mom, Boyfriend Under Arrest

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old girl who was apparently covered in bruises when she was brought to the emergency room.

Police say the a 24-year-old woman showed up at Henry Ford Hospital around 9 p.m. Thursday with her daughter and told doctors the girl had not been eating. The toddler reportedly had injuries consistent with abuse, including bruises and bumps on her head and chest.

The 3-year-old died at the hospital, Detroit Police Officer Adam Madera told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine an exact cause of death.

The girl's mother, along with her 33-year-old boyfriend, have since been taken into police custody.

"They don't appear to be being completely truthful with us so we're still looking into exactly what was the cause and exactly what happened. We're still waiting on the medical examiner's report," Madera said.

The girl's injuries might have occurred at a home in the 5100 block of Webb, in a neighborhood near Elmhurst and Livernois avenue on the city's west side.

It's not clear what charges the couple might face.

"Hopefully the warrant package will go down within the next couple of days and they will be charged," Madera said.

The incident remains under investigation.

""This is absolutely just terrible," Madera said. "Just a 3-year-old child that absolutely did nothing to deserve this."

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-596-2260.
