Davison Freeway Reopens After Police Situation On Overpass

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - A closure of the Davison freeway caused some major traffic delays during the afternoon rush as police dealt with a man on an overpass.

A State Police spokesperson tells WWJ that a State Trooper initiated a pursuit after he saw the man run from a hit-and-a-run accident

It appeared the man was in a standoff with Michigan State Police troopers, who were seen cutting the fencing on the overpass — at the eastbound Davision between Woodward Ave. and John R — to try to get to the man.

They say the man who is believed to have mental health issues had apparently been drinking.

Police confirmed he was safely taken into custody after 6 p.m.

M-8, the Davison, was closed in both directions between Oakland and Woodward Ave. due to the police activity and motorists were urged to avoid the area.

The freeway had reopened before 6:30 p.m., but WWJ Traffic Reporter Kevin Sanderson said to watch for backups; including on the Lodge and I-75 in that area.

No injuries were reported.
