Police: Driver Ejected, Killed In Crash After Avoiding Traffic Stop
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a man was killed in a crash after he tried to avoid a traffic stop on Detroit's west side.
The accident happened around 1:25 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Livernois Avenue and Fenkell Street, just south of the Lodge Freeway.
Michigan State Police say troopers were on patrol when they observed a Chevy Trailblazer fail to stop for a stop sign. Police said the driver was also not wearing a seatbelt.
Troopers ran the SUV's temporary paper plate and realized it was not valid. At that point, the troopers activated their siren and attempted to stop the SUV, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed, according to police.
The driver continued down Livernois Avenue until he struck another vehicle at Fenkell Street. Police say the man was ejected from the SUV and declared dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.
While troopers were rendering aid to the other driver, a 22-year-old Wayne man, they "detected the strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emitting from the driver." He was arrested for operating while intoxicated before being transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Charges are pending.
The crash remains under investigation.
