Police Chase Ends With Fatal Accident In Redford

REDFORD (WWJ) -- A two-vehicle collision left one person dead after a police chase came to a tragic end in Redford on Monday morning.

Police were pursuing a home invasion suspect in Livonia when the suspect fled police down Six Mile Rd. The man driving white Ford Explorer flew through the Six Mile Rd. and Beech-Daly intersection, colliding with another SUV.

The suspect's SUV rolled over on its roof and came to a rest on a sign outside of the Our Lady Of Loretto Church, while the other spun out of control, killing the female driver.

Redford Police Sergeant Duane Gregg said the woman who died was an innocent bystander and was simply travelling through the intersection when her vehicle was struck.

"The vehicle on its roof was going eastbound, the Chevrolet was going northbound," Gregg said. "We're investigating the accident at this time to see exactly what happened -- speed was a factor in the crash. We have one driver injured and one driver deceased."

Police say that the man is in custody, and that he has a record of home invasions.

One witness said that he saw the entire incident unfold.

"I saw the white Explorer flying down Six Mile and when I looked up, the lady was trying to turn over and he hit the car and she spun over and he flipped over, then the police came," the witness said. "I saw him crawl from underneath the car, and the woman never moved -- we went over there, but she didn't respond or anything."
