Police Arrest Suspect Minutes After Fatal Shooting In Inkster
INKSTER (WWJ) - Police have one person in custody following the shooting death of a woman in Inkster.
The shooting happened just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday outside of the 25 Hour Party Store on Michigan Avenue near Beech Daly Street.
According to police, a 26-year-old woman had been involved in an ongoing dispute with a 39-year-old man. As the woman was walking past the party store, the man, who was riding a bicycle, abruptly got off of his bike, brandished a semi-automatic handgun and fired multiple rounds, striking the woman, police said.
A citizen, who happens to be a valid CPL holder, observed the shooting and vacated his vehicle on Michigan Avenue, police said, before ordering the suspect to disengage. At that time, the suspect fired a single round at the citizen, with the citizen returning fire. Neither were struck in the exchange.
The gunman then got back on his bike and fled the scene.
A Wayne County Sheriff's Sergeant was on patrol in the area when he heard about the shooting over the scanner. Within minutes, the sergeant spotted the suspect near Beech Daly and Princeton streets and took the man into custody without incident. A .380 semi-automatic handgun, which was reported stolen, was also recovered.
Names of those involved have not yet been released.
Police say the shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
